Sabi Sand Reserve, Ulusaba - African Safari
Game-rich solitude
The tribe who occupied this area of the Mpumalanga Province in South Africa long ago, used the hills as an outpost for the chief and senior warriors. The elevation gave them tremendous advantage during battle as it made surprise attacks virtually impossible. The tribe members therefore lived safely and named it 'place of little fear’.
FULL DESCRIPTION
The private Game Reserve is located in the western sector of the Sabi Sand Reserve near the Kruger National Park. It is approximately an 80 minute flight by twin-engine aircraft from Johannesburg International Airport to the private airstrip . Because it is privately owned, guests are able to enjoy over 13 500 hectares of unspoilt, game-rich bush in near solitude. Experienced trackers and game rangers accompany visitors on game drives in open Landrovers, tracking the Big Five and sharing their vast knowledge of the surrounding wildlife.
The reserve has two beautiful lodges. Rock Lodge (sleeps 16) is on the summit of a koppie set against the backdrop of the Drakensberg Mountain range far in the distance. Each room has been designed with the colours of a different African tribe or region. Safari Lodge (sleeps 20) is built along the banks of the dry Mabrak riverbed. Guests will love the sense of adventure as they cross the “Raiders of the Lost Ark” style swing bridges between exquisite tree house rooms, created and inspired by local and natural materials, with elephants, bushbucks, lions and other local wildlife passing by.
Apart from twice daily game drives and a daily walk in the bush with a ranger and tracker, guests really need to plan their days to enjoy the other facilities available at Ulusaba. Soak yourself in sun by the pool, relax at the Aroma Boma Beauty Treatment Centres with a wide range of treatments. The more active can play tennis on a floodlit tennis court or work out at the fully equipped gyms any time of the day. The wine cellar at Safari Lodge deserves a visit for a spot of wine tasting, and the observatory tucked away in the bush is ideal for star-gazing. Additional cultural, wildlife or scenic tours, including helicopter trips and a tour of the local community, can also be arranged at extra cost (the proceeds of the community tour are donated to the local vllage). Dine by firelight, candlelight or starlight - feast on a traditional ‘Braai’ in the heart of the bush or sample the local specialities. Let us know what you like and we’ll be happy to make it for you.
Last but not least, the reserve welcomes the opportunity to support economic freedom for the rural villages surrounding the reserve so they set up an organisation called “Pride and Purpose”, focusing on working with the local communities to fix some of the basics, such as bringing water to the village and delivering food and clothing supplies to local orphans.
