Luxury in Losinj Island: Island of vitality, secluded beaches and tranquil fishing villages

High summer, Easter to October, is when it all happens here. The summer climate is perfect for the local flora. The island blooms with 1,200 wild herbs, lovely for cooking and keeping the mosquitoes away! Lošinj is a true outdoor aromatherapy centre, but it was not until the 19th century that people became aware of how advantageous the island climate truly is. Ambroz Haracic, a scientist, studied the local climate and concluded that Losinj was the healthiest place in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The locals look extremely well and years younger than their age, especially given their appetite for grappa, coffee and cigarettes. Over the years its climate attracted many aristocrats to Lošinj in order to improve their health. In 1892 Veli Lošinj and Mali Lošinj were declared climatic resorts and the way for tourism development was paved. Lošinj’s success story is closely related to its rich maritime tradition. In the 19th century Lošinj was home to six shipyards, and it was a shipbuilding and shipping force in the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy.

Lošinj is a Croatian island in the northern Adriatic Sea, in the Kvarner Gulf. Measuring only twenty miles long by two miles wide, it is almost due south of the city of Rijeka and part of the Primorje-Gorski Kotar County. Lošinj is definitely among those special islands with a personality! It has special qualities such as a long tradition, beautiful nature, clean air and a wide range of attractions for tourists. It offers the classic Mediterranean idyll, perfect antique fishing villages, marvellous food, lovely climate, ancient way of life and quiet beaches. The big draw is Mali Lošinj, with its rows of café-terraces along the palm-dotted quayside. Just 45 minutes' walk south along the coast path brings you to the small village of Veli Lošinj, with the little harbour dominated by the Church of St. Anthony, and just beyond the even smaller fishing village of Rovenska. Lošinj is popular with classy Italians and the smarter sailing community. There are various luxury villas for rent and you will never be far from the crystalline waters of the Adriatic and its coves perfect for swimming.

Rent a luxury villa and discover the rich natural and cultural heritage of Lošinj. Churches, monasteries, Renaissance buildings, basilicas and ancient remnants are found all over the island. The local museum and other venues offer ample opportunities for exploring history and art and other wonderful attractions of the island. The town of Osor is an outdoor museum which is an ideal setting for the Osor Musical Evenings hosted by the town each summer. It was once the capital and still boasts a town hall and loggia, a cathedral and a bishop's palace even though it has less than 200 residents today. Take a pleasure trip offshore to see dolphins playing in the water, or sample the fine wines on the pretty island of Susak. For real peace and quiet, head across to the island of Unije, the westernmost isle of the Kvarner Bay. More than 250 events including classical and pop concerts are organized on the islands throughout the year.

On the five islands in the Lošinj archipelago footpaths extend for 250 kilometres, and the archipelago has some first-class dive sites, beautiful scenery and great sailing. There are various spas and therapy centres, and for the more actively minded, there is cycling and water polo.
