In the shade of the great Mont Blanc

Courmayeur has long been a favourite of the Milanese and residents of Turin who descend on it on the weekend to revel in its nightclubs and to eat in its restaurants. The intermediate skiing is good and the heli-skiing is fantastic. There are many little jewels to be discovered like the Val Ferret and Val Veny, two Shangri-la style valleys on either side of the Mont Blanc, and some luxury ski chalets for rent. Almost as famous as its French cousin, Chamonix, it has just as many tales to tell of intrepid mountaineers and fearless skiers. Apart from the catered ski chalets, Courmayeur also offers luxury catered apartments, as well as luxury self-catered chalets and apartments for rent.

Located at the foot of Mont Blanc and at the opposite end of the Mont Blanc Tunnel to Chamonix, Courmayeur is two hours from Milan and less from Turin. It is predominantly a high mountain ski resort for intermediate and experienced skiers, with most people using the cable cars to return to the centre as it is difficult to ski back into the village. There is excellent cross-country skiing in the Val Ferret. Courmayeur and its sister towns of Entreves and Dolone offer charming scenery and the infamous slate-roofed homes of the Aosta valley. The traffic through the tunnel has until recently robbed the towns of their charm, but a new tunnel system bypasses the towns and will make these villages once more the pristine mountain resorts they used to be – wonderful for luxury winter holidays.
