St Anton - Austria
Some of the best off piste skiing in the Alps
St Anton has long been a favourite destination for both skiers and snowboarders looking either for a bit of fun or for the traditional hospitality of the Austrian Alps. Along with its neighbours, Zurs and Lech, St Anton offers extensive skiing, but more aimed at the intermediate and advanced skiers than at beginners. More expert skiers are attracted to the resort by the large amount of outstanding off piste skiing on offer, especially in the Vallurga bowl, which is arguably the best that Austria has to offer. Most of the slopes here are south facing which means that late afternoon skiing can be a bit slushy on a sunny day.
St. Anton itself, unlike its cousins Lech and Zurs, has generally focused on serious skiers who want to have fun and enjoy the best of Austrian hospitality. There are several mountain restaurants and toboggan runs as well as nice pedestrian areas for non-skiers. For skiers you will probably stop in one of several famous mountain restaurants and/or stop on your way down at one of the equally famous vars. This is not a jet-set resort of fur coats as much as a relaxed, fun resort that ranks high on our list of top ski destinations in Europe.
