Catered Chalets Kuusamo area - Finland
Kuusamo captures the cold in “cool” conditions
Fabulous, fairyland, fascinating, fairy lights, fluffy snow……these are all words that make one think of Kuusamo in winter. What a beautiful place to be! Kuusamo is one of the main centres for winter sports and roughly speaking, boasts of nearly one million holidaymakers every year. Ruka, one of the largests ski resorts, is located in Kussamo. The resort has often been the host for many international competitions in ski jumping, cross country skiing and Nordic combined. The 2005 World Championships of Freestyle Skiing was held there. Kuusamo Airport is located 6 kilometres (4 mi) north-east from Kuusamo town centre. From 1964 to 2003, when the Mühlenkopfschanze in Hessian Willingen was converted, the Rukatunturi at Kuusamo was the world's biggest large hill. But especially in the latter years of this era, this status was becoming quite doubtful since it was relapsing. Due to this reason it was modernized in 1996. Floodlights were installed and this made night competitions possible, so that it became a tradition for the occasion of the World Cup Opening at Kuusamo, taking place annually in November since 2002! A bus service operates all the year round between Kuusamo airport and the centre of Ruka, meeting passengers from all regular flights. It also provides an excellent service between different points in and around Ruka: just ask the driver to stop where you want to get off for your luxury rental chalet. Please note that the bus does not go to the centre of Kuusamo.
Finland, and we believe Kuusamo as well, has been inhabited since after the Ice Age, and as such has had a prolonged and fascinating past. A part of the Kingdom of Sweden from the 13th century until 1809, it then became a self-governing dukedom of the Russian Empire until 1917, when it announced independence. The city lies on a roughly 250-meter-high plateau. In the area of Kuusamo there are many hills and Ruka has one of the highest altitudes [462m]. 14% of the area of Kuusamo is covered by water. During the long winters, you can enjoy a variety of activities that are not only guaranteed to keep you warm, but will also make your holiday in a private chalet in Finland unforgettable fun. Skiing and riding a snowmobile provide hours of action after which a steamy sauna session will relax your muscles and leave you feeling spoilt. Kuusamo is not known for its artistic variety, nor for its wealth of architectural joys, but there will always be something to enjoy at Kuusamo House, from a musical performance, theatre, an art exhibition, to the latest movies. There are plenty of other options for winter guests, such as enjoying a reindeer or dog-sled safari, snowshoe excursions, snowmobile trips, or viewing the Northern Lights. Do not miss out: there is a myriad of restaurants to choose from, the area is famous for its Karaoke nights in many of the bars and places of entertainment.
Non-sporting: The indigenous animals in Finland provide interesting tourist attractions. You can visit a bear sanctuary, do bear watching trip, go on husky excursions or visit a reindeer farm. Eating out at a traditional Finnish restaurant is an experience. For any keen photographer there are wonderful photography exhibitions to visit. Or, why not pay a visit to the beloved guy in the red coat, Santa Claus…?
There is hardly a winter sport activity that cannot be practised with thrilling enjoyment in Lapland: winter ice fishing, ice karting, ski and snowboard safaris, cross country skiing and downhill skiing, ice skating, snowmobile riding.
