Céline Renaud’s Summer Guide to Megève, France

Guide to Megève in Summer

If you are thinking of holidaying in the Alps over summer, this should be one of the destinations you should consider. Megève is one hour from Geneva airport, two hours from Lyon, and two and a half hours from Milan or Turin.

You have a setting here of rolling hills, green pastures, cows, lovely views, and a congenial social atmosphere. Best of all though, is that you do not have the searing heat or crowds of the coast and there is plenty of healthy outdoor living to do with the family.

I loved Megève, having lived there for 3 years, and now I spend a couple of days there ever so often, enjoying the summer time. It is wonderful to stay over in Megève to say hello to my friends and visit some new properties or hotels for Leo Trippi, to try out some of the restaurants of course to experience some new activities.

The best way to travel is always to find the best for you and for me.

This time I decided to stay in the Alpaga hotel, and I can say I’ve been very impressed. I already knew that was the place to be, but I didn’t really grasp the reason why before my arrival. Let me show my trip through pictures, and you will certainly understand why you must go to the Alpaga & Megeve in summer (winter is wonderful too; I will do another blog for it later).

When I checked in around 8:30 at night, the lady at the front desk was very happy to see me and really helpful with my heavy bag. She showed me my bedroom: a lovely white designer bedroom overlooking the mountain and stunning chalets. During my two day stay, the whole Alpaga team were absolutely amazing and kind and always there with a gentle smile from to help and assist with anything. This made my stay unforgettable.Note they have a Concierge « Clefs d’or », on par with the concierge of the best places in the world, to assist you.

Because I was alone, I decide to dine downtown and enjoy a pizza with a glass of wine. I stopped in the main street, at a teeny little snack shack with a nice terrace called the Deli’s corner; it’s was great and the pizza was lovely. To make a reservation call +33 4 50 21 02 61.

The next day I decided to wake up very early to enjoy the magic colours of the mountain.

Eating my breakfast outside on the sunny terrace.

I took my breakfast outside on the sunny terrace, then saw some balloons floating around the valley and then two lovely baby kittens came to say hello!

Then I decided to go to the Altiport of Megeve in la Cote 2000, to see some small planes and helicopters landing and taking off. You can always enjoy a spin around Mont Blanc;

Then, just before my visit was done, I stopped to see the Adventure AccroBranche : it was already full of kids climbing trees and yelling with happiness. Reservation & information : Mobile phone: +33 6 76 29 71 04 cote2000aventure@aliceadsl.fr.

Of course I did stop at the Mont d’Arbois to see our fabulous Chalet Des Sens.

And I got down to the mystical village of Megeve with my green caleche : that is something you must do!

I chose to go during this weekend, because I love horses and twice a year there is the Jumping and the Snow Polo.

I went down to Combloux by car, and to enjoy lunch at Cote Lac, a very nice restaurant with the best view over the Mont Blanc.

Lunch viewing Mont Blanc

As usual, the Chef had some fantastic dishes, and it was totally great to enjoy this in the sunshine. I decided to go for some Alpes Charcuterie & a vegetarian plate, a very nice fresh Rosé wine with some ice … and a lovely jump in the pool. The views are incredible and just behind you, you have the BIOTOPE biologique outdoor pool:

After this great lunch, I headed back to the Alpaga hotel and decided to spend the rest of the afternoon in the SPA.

In the garden they added a new outside Swedish hot tub only 5 days previously, so that one can now enjoy being outside while staying in the water. This was a fantastic experience: enjoying the bells of the cows, the 360° view overlooking the mountain and the stunning herb garden.

This afternoon was just completely relaxing.

My family, who lives in Megeve, came for the aperitif and dinner. We really enjoyed the terrace, overlooking the mountain, and the weather was just fabulous.

After breakfast the next day, I decided to try the Colline Spa Treatment and discovered a very nice range of treatments.  I tested the express Treatment: Regenerating and Replumping for 45 minutes. This was again really a great surprise and I fell in love with this excellent skincare from Switzerland.

After this very nice days I left Megève to my next trip…. Celine.
