Northern Lights Holidays

Where Can I See the Northern Lights?

One of the main reasons people love to come to the Arctic is to view the famous Northern Lights. This remarkable phenomenon is caused by activity on the surface of the sun which produces magnificent dancing waves of light. They usually occur between 60 and 75 degrees of latitude, which covers northern parts of Canada, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Alaska and Russia as well as all of Iceland.

When Can I See the Northern Lights?

With more stable weather conditions and milder temperatures, plus greater aurora activity around the equinoxes, spring and autumn are generally the best time for a trip to see the Northern Lights. The strongest lights tend to appear between 9 pm and 2 am, although the best sightings often occur between 11 pm and midnight.

Finland Northern Lights Holiday

If you are looking to experience the Northern Lights on your luxury holiday to Finnish Lapland, then December through to March is the best time to visit. During these months you can enjoy numerous snowy activities, from snowmobiling and husky sledding to nature walks and cross-country skiing. For a once-in-a-lifetime experience, stay at Octola Private Wilderness for the duration of your luxury Lapland holiday and experience secluded wilderness and exhilarating activities. Also recommended for an Arctic adventure is Javri Lodge, a fantastic base for exploring this tranquil part of the world.

Iceland Northern Lights Holiday

Iceland is one of the best places in the world to see the aurora borealis. Peak season for viewing the northern lights in Iceland is September through March when the nights are long. You can also see them towards the end of August but they tend to be fainter due to the lighter evenings. The general rule is the darker it is, the better. Why not combine your trip to see the northern lights with a guided heli-ski tour at the renowned Deplar Farm? This converted sheep farm is the ultimate luxurious Icelandic retreat and provides a gateway to multiple Arctic adventures.

Sweden Northern Lights Holiday

Swedish Lapland is another destination that is popular for spotting the Northern Lights. Although it is possible to spot them in late August, the best time to see the aurora borealis in Sweden is between September and March. The ideal time of day is between 9:00 pm and 2:00 am. When planning a holiday to the Arctic Circle, there is no need to scrimp on luxury. Luxury lodges in Swedish Lapland include the fabulous Fjellborg Arctic Lodge, a haven of tranquility 200 km north of the Arctic Circle. Relax in the master cabin or embark on a privately guided adventure such as a snowmobile excursion to an indigenous Sami camp. For a more romantic trip, Logger's Lodge is a romantic Lapland luxury log cabin for two set deep in the forest off the Gulf of Bothnia. It provides a great base from which to enjoy various Nordic activities including ski touring, dog sledding and snowmobile safaris.

Where Else Can I See the Northern Lights?

Luxury holidays to Alaska are popular with those hoping to spot the Northern Lights. The best time to view them here is between late August and late April. The further north you travel in Alaska, the more likely you are to see the Northern Lights. For a once-in-a-lifetime experience, stay at the spectacular Sheldon Chalet. Perched on a mountain ridge above the Don Sheldon Amphitheatre, the chalet is the perfect place for observing the aurora borealis as well as embarking on heli-adventures and guided glacier exploration.
