What the Press are Saying

"Jávri goes from forest cabin to minimalist cave in the twist of a steel spiral staircase...The food is superb, imaginatively capitalising on local ingredients — reindeer, lake fish, ptarmigan, mushrooms and berries...There is sledding with reindeer and huskies, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, tobogganing and ice fishing. And those are just the winter activities; there’s a host more for summer."

Skiing in Finland

Skiing in Finland

Whilst many associate the northern province of Finnish Lapland with plenty of snow and year-round Christmas charm, the country has some fantastic skiing on offer as well. With roughly a third of Finland in the arctic circle and many of the country's ski resorts within this region, as you can imagine snow is guaranteed.

Due to its geographical location, the ski season in Finland is much longer than many other countries in the Alps such as Switzerland or France or even the dolomites. The ski season typically runs from November, all the way through to April making a luxury ski holiday in Finland a perfect choice for a snow sure late season trip.

There are no large mountain ranges in Finland so don’t expect to find a large array of steep descents as experienced in the Alps or the Dolomites. Instead, Finland plays host to some exceptional skiing for beginners and families with its mellow slopes and inclusive resorts. Like many other Nordic countries, Finland also offers some great cross-country terrain for those looking for a different kind of challenge.

A ski holiday in Finland opens up many opportunities away from the slopes with many kinds of winter activities such as snowshoeing, reindeer riding and tobogganing. For those looking to take in the spectacle of the Northern Lights, Finland is one of the best locations. The Northern Lights season in Finland runs from August all the way through to Spring.

Ski resorts in Finland

There are more than 75 ski resorts in Finland with the majority based in the northern half of the country. Amongst the top resorts is Ylläs, the biggest ski resort in Finland with the longest slopes. Ylläs boasts a total of 500 km of skiable piste split between two villages with skiing access to them both. There are 62 runs in total and although they are not as long as ski runs in the Alps there is plenty of skiing to last you the week.

Another well known ski resort is Salla, said to be in the middle of “snowhere” in the Finnish Lapland region. The resort embodies Lapland wilderness but is surprisingly well connected by both public and private transport. A smaller but steeper resort, Salla has just 15 slopes and 7 lifts and 2 snow parks, but many skiers are drawn to the resort by tranquil nature and snowy views! Located 2 hours east by car from Rovaniemi, Salla could be a fantastic day trip for guests staying at Octola Private Wilderness or Octola Villa.

Finland hosts many smaller ski resorts such as Saariselkä. Open from Mid November until early May Saariselka has 22 slopes with blue to black runs split across two peaks. Guests staying at Javri Lodge have easy access to the resort which is just a 5 minute drive away.
