Luxury Ski Holidays in Sweden

With rolling hills and roaring rivers, Sweden is the very essence of untouched wilderness. If there’s one thing to tick off your bucket list, it’s a visit to Swedish Lapland.

From the spectacular Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) to the stunning scenery and fascinating Sami culture, Swedish Lapland is the ultimate playground for young and old. One of the most popular regions to visit in Swedish Lapland is Kiruna. Home to the Abisko National Park, Sweden’s highest mountain Kebnekaise and the ski resorts of Björkliden and Riksgränsen, Kiruna is the perfect destination for an active holiday.

Spanning from Skellefteå in the south to Kiruna in the north, the landscape is diverse, with rivers, lakes, forests and mountains. What’s more, the region has eight seasons, with skiing taking place from late autumn to mid-summer.

However, it’s not all about skiing and touring. Swedish Lapland offers a plethora of activities from reindeer herding and scenic snowshoe hikes to dog sledding, chasing the Northern Lights and spending the night in the original ICEHOTEL.

What the Press are Saying

" Located on the shores of frozen Lake Väkkärä, 100 miles above the Arctic Circle, this remote lodge is a beautiful place to try new adventures. Its proprietor, Kenth Fjellborg, is a legendary musher who will make sure you get behind a dog team. You might also reenergize in a wood-fired sauna, or try your hand at ice fishing, snowshoeing, and exploring the forests and lakes on a snowmobile—at night."

What the Press are Saying

"A romantically reimagined 19th-century pinewood cabin straight from The Chronicles of Narnia, it lies deep in forest off the Gulf of Bothnia with blankets of snow visible from every angle. Enjoy Nordic ski tours over frozen lakes, punctuated with a welcome outdoor barbecue (reindeer and cinnamon buns). Kick back later with long candlelit dinners of Kalix caviar and Arctic char, served with jugs of lingonberry and vodka cocktails and plenty of jazz."

Skiing in Sweden

Skiing in Sweden

Lying on the edge of the Arctic Circle, it’s not surprising that Sweden has an abundance of snow throughout the winter. The ski season in Sweden is typically longer than many resorts in the Alps, with resorts opening from mid-November to the beginning of May. This makes Sweden a great option for a snow-sure holiday.

Much of the downhill skiing terrain across the country is a little more mellow in comparison to the Alps and the Dolomites, making it a great option for beginners, intermediates and families. Whilst Sweden does have some great resorts for downhill skiing, as with the other Nordic countries, cross country skiing is also very popular with many resorts offering large cross-country areas.

Ski resorts in Sweden

There are more than 100 ski resorts in Sweden with the majority based in the southern half of the country. Amongst the top resorts is Åre which has recently been crowned Sweden’s Best Ski Resort at the 2022 World Ski Awards. Åre is probably the most commercial of Sweden’s resorts with over 50 restaurants and bars and a charming village centre. The resort itself boasts 34 lifts and just over 90 km of downhill pistes, with access to some great backcountry terrain as well.

Another popular resort is Sälen, which consists of several large ski areas Kläppen, Lindvallen, Högfjället, Tandådalen, Hundfjället and Stöten – making it Northern Europe’s largest ski resort. With over 161 km of pistes across the five resorts, there is certainly enough terrain to allow you to ski somewhere new each day. These smaller resorts are certainly more suited to beginners and make a great option for a family ski holiday in Sweden.
