Luxury in Megeve: The farming village made famous by the Rothschilds

Megève, an idyllic commune in Haute Savoie, is well-known due to its popularity as a ski resort near the Mont Blanc in the French Alps. It is the French equivalent of Gstaad or St. Moritz. It is an ideal resort for families with more than 300km of inter-connected slopes, as in the Trois Vallées, and with 75% of slopes either intermediate or beginner and it is linked with the neighbouring ski area of St. Gervais. Megève opened a fabulous ski area, "Domaine Evasion Mont Blanc", which gives direct access to a number of linked ski areas and includes 18 excellent cross-country skiing trails totalling 95km, 38km of Nordic skiing and the Ecole de Ski Française for children from 3 years upwards. Polo enthusiasts should not miss the January Polo Masters. The stylish town is a paradise for window-shoppers and for people who want to enjoy a ski resort without necessarily skiing all day. There are fantastic restaurants both on the pistes and in town and there is a lovely outdoor ice-skating rink, centrally located in town.

It was conceived in the 1920's as a French alternative to Saint-Moritz by the Rothschild's, who started to spend their winter vacations there. As such, it was the first purpose-built resort in the Alps. Originally it was a prime destination for the French aristocracy and it remains one of the most famous and fanciest ski resorts in the world. Megève is many things: a resort with an atmosphere of elegance and style that attracts the international jet set, an excellent family holiday destination, a cultural and social centre that retains a delightfully French atmosphere. It is dotted with lovely boutiques and beautiful catered ski chalets. Guests can enjoy a horse driven tour of the town or just sit back in one of the luxury ski chalets for rent in front of a log fire with an intriguing book from the town library. Megève, a little more than an hour's drive from Geneva airport, is also well placed for day trips to Courmayeur, Martigny and Annecy, and is ideally situated luxury winter holidays.
