Luxury in Turks and Caicos: A daydream-worthy island getaway
Turks and Caicos is a 37-mile chain of islands, only a 90-minute plane ride from Miami, with dreamy blue crystal clear waters full of marine life, golden beaches perfect for spending long, relaxing days, and bioluminescent glow worms lighting up the water at night. The more than 230 miles of white-sand beaches and prime scuba-diving conditions on the world's third-largest barrier reef are by far the strongest attractions for tourists. The Turks and Caicos Islands feel lost in time. Overall, the vibe in the Turks and Caicos Islands is laid-back, reflecting the welcoming attitude of the native ‘Belongers’. All the shops are local, with no chain stores. Because of the islands' carefree and slow-paced nature you will not find vibrant city-style nightlife, but beach shacks and bars remain open for island-style evening entertainment. The Turks and Caicos Islands are truly tranquil and very safe. Most of the islands remain largely unspoilt, with small, personal places to stay and a heavy emphasis on ecotourism. Luxury villas and private seaside villas for rent are readily available.
These Islands consist of 40 islands and cays, of which only 12 are inhabited. There are two main islands, Grand Turk (Turks Islands) and Providenciales (Caicos Islands). Before Christopher Columbus set foot on the island of Grand Turk, Taino and Lucayan Tribes inhabited the island. These earlier settlers left behind a rich heritage and new words including ‘canoe', ‘Caribbean' and ‘Caicos'. Around the early 1980's, the islands started to become a tourist destination. There are around 80 restaurants on the islands, mostly on the island of Providenciales. Only a few years ago, local restaurants did not know what was going to be on the menu for dinner until the fishing boats brought in their catch of the day. Today the islands feature fine and inventive cuisine and brilliant chefs. Sunny, even temperatures make the Turks and Caicos Islands a year-round destination. Taxis are widely available at all airports and seaports as well as throughout the island. Many of the taxis drivers can also act as a personal tour guide and show you undiscovered island attractions.
