Luxury in Crete: Rustic Rethymno area for complete relaxation
This area is somewhat off the beaten track and keeps a lower profile in tourist development: thus much more quiet and peaceful than most of the other regions. This does not mean that there are not enough things to see and do, but it means that your holiday will depend on your preferences - cosmopolitan or totally personal. Rhethymno is full of stunning beaches, most interesting archaeological sites, Byzantine churches, picturesque villages with private villas for rent and sparkling resorts. Rethymnon Town is the capital, a town with powerful Medieval architecture and a beautiful Venetian harbour. Bali, Agia Galini, Plakias and Adelianos Kampos are among the most popular beach resorts in the Rethymno area. While driving around, you will see countless sheltered bays for total privacy. Interesting sights to visit in the region are the historical Monasteries of Preveli and Arkadi, the Ideon Cave, where god Zeus was raised according to mythology, and the many ravines up-country. Outside the town, you can visit dramatic canyons, monasteries, time-trampled villages with ancient churches, the south coast Libyan sea, fantastic mountains of Psiloritis and the Lefka Ori, or White Mountains.
On Crete, Rethymno is a fascinating array of lively resorts, age-old hamlets and invigorating towns where you can rent a comfortable luxury villa. There is amazing environmental variety just a few kilometres from the region’s lively capital on the north coast. You’ll quickly find yourself dipped in eternal serenity and natural beauty as you float through quaint villages, most of them embraced by olive trees where locals treasure traditions which have stood the test of time. A well-known tourist guide commented: Descend into the murky darkness of grotto-like caves or explore the island’s ‘upper storey’ atop lofty Mt Psiloritis, Crete’s highest peak. Soak up the sun on a sandy beach, hot-rod it around the countryside or sip a cocktail at a waterfront cafe-bar. As you loiter through this spellbinding land, be prepared to be surprised round any bend. There are two sides to Rethymno: the endless long sandy beach that stretches from the east end of Rethymno, lapping up the coastal hamlets of Perivolia, Platanias, Adelianos Kambos, Pigianos Kambos, Sfakaki, Stavromenos and Skaleta, and the Rethymno that allows you the character of an ancient town.
