Skiing in Cortina d'Ampezzo

Cortina's 120 km of pistes are spread around three separate and varied ski areas - Faloria-Cristallo, Tofana Socrepes and Cinque Torri-Lagazuoi. The latter two are linked by the new gondola from Son dei Prade to Bai de Dones. With red-tinged peaks rising vertically from the tops of the runs, the backdrop to luxury ski holidays in Cortina d'Ampezzo is simply stunning.

Best for beginner skiers is the network of wide, easy blue runs served by high-speed chairlifts on the extensive lower slopes above Socrepes. Confident intermediates should head to the Faloria-Cristallo area which has plenty of red and black runs. There's also the epic 8km Armentarola red piste from Lagazuoi with its breathtaking scenery of towering cliffs and frozen waterfalls. Experts can enjoy excellent ski touring with a guide - the Super8 Ski Tour traverses three Dolomite mountain passes: Forcella Averau, Croda Negra and Lagazuoi.

It is also possible to go cross-country skiing, including along a long stretch of the old railway line, or enjoy a magical snowshoe trek through the fabled forests of the Ampezzo Dolomites Nature Park.

Whilst there are few ski-in/ski-out chalets in Cortina, many catered chalets will have their own driving service which will deliver you to and from the slopes at a time to suit you.
