Skiing in Japan

For fans of deep powder, Japan is the place to be with up to 600 inches of snow through the mountains during the winter. January and early February are particularly popular times for powderhounds seeking incredible skiing conditions, but skiers have the whole winter season from November to May to enjoy.

Skiers of every level have something to delight in during a luxury ski holiday in Japan. For beginners and intermediate-level skiers, the Annupuri ski area in Niseko provides well-groomed runs and low gradient slopes, whilst experienced skiers will thoroughly enjoy the black runs of Niseko village and the deep powder backcountry. For further excitement, Hanazono also has three terrain parks with a pipe and jumps for all levels.

For an experience never to be forgotten during your ski vacation in Japan, accomplished backcountry skiers can even ski inside the crater of a stratovolcano before commencing their descent through some of the finest powder in the world. At 1898m, Mt. Yotei is the highest mountain in the region with the longest vertical ski run in Hokkaido.

Open every night of the season, Japan is famously known for its floodlit slopes, having offered night skiing for over 50 years. Lights cut through the evening fog and shadows are cast on the bumps of the ski terrain so visibility is often clearer at night than during the day. For skiers looking to avoid the crowds, night skiing often sees fewer skiers on the piste.

Fans of off-piste skiing can even ski in the backcountry at night with lights reaching off-piste terrain.
