There is no better time to be in the Swiss Alps than Christmas time. With twinkling lights, Christmas markets and beautiful scenery, Switzerland is the perfect destination for a festive ski holiday. Kitzbuhel is another Austrian ski resort famous for its Christmas market, with live music, traditional performances, milled-wine stands and Tyrolean delicacies adding to the festive atmosphere. Children are also encouraged to write a wish list and deliver it via the Kitzbuhel Christkindlpost office, located at the snow star directly at the Sparkassenplatz.
Christmas in the Dolomites
Dripping in alpine charm, Christmas in the Dolomites should be at the top of your bucket list. Christmas cheer comes in the form of festive markets, roasted chestnuts, traditional woodcarving and handicrafts. In the square in Corvara, Alta Badia, you'll find colourful Christmas lights, local choirs singing and fabulous Ladin cuisine such as strudel and krapfen.
Christmas skiing in Cortina d'Ampezzo sees the famous shopping street, Corso Italia, turned into a beautiful festive market with diverse handicrafts and mulled wine served from snowy wooden huts. Val Gardena is also known for its Christmas magic with the towns of Selva, Santa Cristina and Ortisei coming alive with traditional markets and alpine charm.
