If you are in Valle d’Aosta and you want to taste something special in a very nice environment, we recommend Chalet Etoile restaurant, aka Ulla’s. The British Telegraph chose it as one of the ten best mountain restaurants in the world!
Chalet Etoile is a traditional, quaint ski lodge located halfway up the mountain, at the bottom of the Cervino, in Cervinia, Italy. It is always filled with the buzz of hungry skiers, a great place to go to take a break from the slopes.
The interior is particularly impressive, every detail recalls the high mountain style, with its wooden and stone elements. Chalet Etoile is split into two parts. There is a cafe where you can buy a light lunch, such as pizza and sandwiches. In the restaurant section you can sit in the cosy Alpine living room and enjoy the full menu. The restaurant also has an outdoor deck, on which you can relax and relish the sunshine and the magnificent view. We of course, chose the full restaurant experience on the terrace.
Many reasons to visit Chalet Etoile
At Ulla’s you will always get good service, be comfortable and, of course, get amazingly good food! All dishes are well prepared, tasty and served with a stylish touch. The menu is extensive, making it difficult to test everything in a week’s skiing holiday. The kitchen produces both international and national cuisine, with Italian favourites high in demand. Fish is their specialty and the fish soup is excellent. The Alpine-fish soup consists of fresh shellfish and lots of fish, with a variety of spices. A wide range of wines from the well-stocked cellar can be tasted.
“During these 40 or so years, we have always tried to offer our clients the best by improving the setting to increase the comfort, and by offering high quality food. Our chef Ulla, over the years, have been researching different dishes to recommend to our customers, increasing our menu with innovative recipes including reindeer fillet tempura and ravioli with king crab. Our menu varies between fish, meat and of course the traditional meals of our region.’’ (www.chaletetoile.it)
We went for the highlights – the succulent king crap ravioli, lobster spaghetti and reindeer fillet tempura, and also Pasta fagottini with gorgonzola, pear and valnødde sauce. Simply amazing. Especially with a large glass Nasto Azzuro beer.
The food is a serious rival to that on the Swiss side of the Matterhorn, but the prices are much more friendly. We were told that half of the guests here will have commuted from Zermatt, which is renowned for its gourmet food.
Over the Christmas period, the restaurant serves traditional Swedish Christmas food including everything from herring and schnapps to sausages and Christmas ham.
How to get to Ulla’s
Chalet Etoile is on the slopes of the ski area in Cervinia, Italy, perfectly situated at the foot of Cervino, Matterhorn and you will easily get there by taking the new lift Pancheron. You can also take the chair lift from Plan Maison, where you can then find the restaurant on the piste number 6 from Plateau Rosà.As you might imagine, it is essential to book in advance.
We suggest that you rent a luxury ski chalet in Cervinia in the 2016/17 ski season – and visit Ulla’s!
