With temperatures warming up, beautiful bluebird days and crowd-free pistes, March can be a wonderful time of year for a ski holiday. Our guide to the best skiing in March takes into account resort altitude, snowfall and what events or activities you can look forward to during the month.

Where to go skiing in March?

Go skiing in March and reap the benefits of warmer temperatures, longer days on the piste, less queuing and fantastic outdoor events. With the school holidays over, March is a good time to go skiing for families with very young children who are making their first turns as well as adults looking to enjoy some child-free time on the slopes. But which resort to choose? For the best snow conditions, you should head to high-altitude resorts where the snow is more settled and compact. If entertainment is high on your agenda, you might also want to consider resorts with live music or sporting events taking place during March. Best March Skiing in Europe

Europe offers fabulous skiing in March across France, Switzerland, Austria, Italy and beyond. Andorra is also a popular destination for March skiing with its wide choice of north-facing and south-facing slopes. No matter whether you are a beginner just starting out or an expert off-pister, Europe’s pistes have something to offer every level of skier.

Tignes in March

The snowiest week in Tignes is in the first week of March so if you are looking for fresh powder then this high-altitude resort is for you. Nowhere in the Alps has quite the extent and variety of high-altitude skiing as Tignes, whose ski area is linked to Val d’Isere’s. The quality of snow is usually excellent above mid-stations in March although with spring on its way, you can expect some of the home runs to get a little tricky.

Boarders should take note too, as from March 10th - 18th 2023, Tignes plays host to Mountain Shaker, a week-long festival dedicated to board culture. Events include the Freeride World Qualifier, Freeride Junior Tour, FISE Xperience Series and the Slopestyle World Cup. Plus there’s action in the indoor skatepark and a village zone for anyone looking to listen to DJs and soak up the atmosphere.

Chamonix in March

Also receiving the most snow in March, Chamonix gets regular snowfall at this time of year - on average nine days - and temperatures still dip below freezing at night to freshen it up. The best snow can be found at Les Grands Montets above Argentière. This end of the valley is naturally snowier than the Chamonix end with Le Tour claiming to be the snowiest village in France. With the ski area reaching over 3,000m you can be pretty sure to find decent snow here at this time of year

March can also be considered Chamonix’s party month with the biggest night taking place on St Patrick’s Day on 17th March. Expect green beer, Irish-themed nights, fancy dress and plenty of live music. Another event taking place during the month of March is La Trace des Grands Ski Touring. Kicking off at Les Grands Montets, the festival promises a ski touring race, a ski mountaineering course and a festival village giving you the chance to test equipment, train with avalanche kit and learn more about ski touring.

Best Skiing in Switzerland in March

Verbier in March

Whilst you can expect mixed conditions in March, some of the best snowfalls in Verbier tend to come in this month giving the ideal combination of regular top-ups interspersed with sunny days. With its variety of excellent mountain restaurants, you can expect to enjoy a few long lunches on the terrace before experiencing Verbier’s famous aprés-ski. March also sees the Xtreme Freeride World Tour Final arrive in Verbier. During the event, the resort comes alive as athletes from all over the world descend on the resort. For the best view of the mighty Bec des Rosses, head to the top of the Jumbo gondola and watch in awe as athletes navigate the terrifying descent. Saas Fee in March

With one of the highest and most snow-sure lift-served glaciers in the Alps, Saas Fee is one of the best resorts in Switzerland for skiing in March. You can even rely on its nursery slopes for snow at this time of year, making this an ideal resort for beginners. Known as the “Pearl of the Alps”, marvel at the spectacular scenery as you navigate 150 km of slopes or pay a visit to the world’s highest revolving restaurant with its 360-degree panoramic views. If you are planning on visiting Saas Fee in March, make sure you are there for the Allalin Race, a famous downhill race taking place on the 24th & 25th March 2023 for the 41st time. The Allalin races are considered the highest glacier descents in the world with skiers reaching speeds of 140 kilometres per hour.

Best Skiing in Austria in March

St Anton in March

With an excellent snow record and many north-facing slopes, St Anton manages to hold the snow well in March despite strong spring sunshine. Snowmaking is comprehensive on its lower slopes, ensuring that runs back to base nearly always remain open. When skiing in St Anton in March, it is important to be aware that conditions can be less consistent than in the earlier part of the season, so if you plan to venture off-piste we recommend hiring a guide.

Don’t want to forget your epic ski trip? During March skiers can rent the latest action cameras from MountainMediaCentre free of charge. Your material is then cut into a professional and personal winter sports film. You can also book a cameraman or drone pilot to capture your perfect turns on the piste (for an additional charge). For fans of blues, Dixie, funk and soul music, St Anton brings a US southern flair to the resort at the end of the March with the “New Orleans meets Snow” music festival. With a full line-up of on-mountain concerts, parties and street festivals, this is a celebration not to be missed.

Lech in March

With the highest average snowfall of any major ski area in the Alps, Lech is regarded as one of the safest bets in Austria. Snow cover is pretty much guaranteed until the end of April, even at resort level, but you can expect some slushier conditions towards the end of the month. In March the best skiing can usually be found on the north-facing slopes of Warth, part of the extensive Arlberg network.

During your ski holiday in Lech, why not attempt the White Ring ski tour? This exhilarating 22 km ski circuit links Lech to neighbouring Zürs, Zug and Oberlech, taking around half a day to complete depending on your ability.

Best Skiing in Italy in March

Alta Badia in March

Whilst conditions in Alta Badia can be variable in March, snowmaking and piste maintenance is state of the art. On-piste, snow cover is therefore very reliable late in the season. Arraba in particular is ideal for both nature lovers and winter sports enthusiasts during March. The village and its ski lifts can be found not far from the Dolomites’ highest peak at 3,343m. It is also well-located for accessing other resorts on the Sella Ronda circuit such as Corvara and Colfosco.

Whilst the sun tends to make more of an appearance at this time of year, it does mean that the Dolomites in March are ideal for enjoying long lunches on a sunny terrace and lively apres-ski sessions. You can also enjoy a special edition of the “Sommelier on the Slopes” event on 21st March 2023 where a tasting menu with matching Alto Adige wines is offered at two selected huts - Tablá and Club Moritzino.

March has historically been one of the snowiest months of the year in Aspen so you can expect good conditions if you choose to visit at this time of year. There’s still the chance of a springtime snowstorm, whilst, for the most part, the weather in Aspen and Snowmass remains warm and sunny - the best of both worlds. Lifts stay open until 4 pm most days giving you longer days on the slopes and plenty of time to enjoy aprés-ski.

This year from the 3rd - 5th March, Aspen Snowmass is gearing up for the return of the Audi FIS Ski World Cup. Throughout the weekend, locals and visitors can enjoy free outdoor events, concerts and incredible skiing and riding across all four of Aspen’s mountains.

Best Skiing in Canada in March

Expect bluebird powder days aplenty if you are planning on skiing in March in Whistler. With the crowds disappearing and some of the heaviest snowfalls of the year, a ski holiday in Whistler in March is not to be missed. Although the après scene is year-round in Whistler, the resort really comes alive in March with the warmer temperatures and longer daylight hours allowing for a few drinks on a sunny patio.

There’s lots going on in March too, from the Canadian Luge Championships at Whistler Sliding Centre to the 30th Annual TELLUS Winter Classic. This action-packed weekend features fun-filled ski events, wine, beer and food galore as well as their famous live and silent auctions.
