Where is Val d'Isere?

Val d’Isere is located in the Tarentaise Valley, in the Savoie department in southeastern France. It lies 5 km from the French-Italian border and is on the border of the Vanoise National Park. Sharing a ski area with neighbouring Tignes, Val d’Isere sits at 1850 metres with the pistes reaching 3488 metres at the Pointe du Montet and Pissaillas glacier just below at 3450 metres. Skiers have a choice of 300 km of runs making it one of the largest ski areas in Europe.

The resort itself is about a mile long with several satellite villages including Le Fornet at the foot of the Col de l’Iseran sector and La Daille.

Flying to Val d'Isere

With four international airports within a 3 hour drive of Val d’Isere, getting to the resort couldn’t be easier. The nearest airports are Chambery (144 km) and Grenoble (217 km) followed by Lyon (221 km ) and Geneva (223 km).

Due to the selection of airlines, frequent flight times and lower costs, Geneva airport is usually the most popular airport to fly to when travelling to Val d’Isere. From the airport it is best to book an airport transfer which takes around 3 hours. Operating every weekend during the winter season, buses are another option.

Airport Transfers to Val d'Isere

When it comes to booking an airport transfer there are several options available. The quickest option is to book a private transfer but it also tends to be pricier. However you can guarantee door to door service and there’s no hanging around for other passengers to collect their luggage or be dropped off en-route.

We work with several partners in Val d’Isere and our recommendations include Mountain Express, SnowDrone Transfers and Mountain Rescue Transfers. Mountain Express has a fleet of 16 well-maintained VW T6 Caravelle 8 passenger mini buses and two Mercedes V-Class Executive 6 passenger minibuses. SnowDrone Transfers are based in Val d’Isere, Tignes and Biarritz and have an ultra modern fleet of luxurious vehicles including Volkswagen Caravelle and Tesla Model X. Mountain Rescue is an independent family-run business based in the Alps with a fleet of comfortable Volkswagen vehicles.

Trains to Val d'Isere

The closest train station to Val d’Isere is Bourg St Maurice (32 km), around a 45 minute drive from the resort. Trains from Paris to Bourg St Maurice usually involve several changes and take between 5 ½ to 6 ½ hours.

Driving to Val d'Isere

Whilst a car is not necessary in resort due to the regular free shuttle buses, it can give you some added flexibility during your stay. It is important to note that the road from Bourg St Maurice is around 30 km long and particularly winding in places. Snow clearers operate every day in winter but conditions can be tricky so make sure you are prepared with winter tyres and snow chains.
