Originally developed in the 1960s, Vail was designed to replicate the charm of a Bavarian alpine village, a vision inspired by its founders' time in the European Alps with the 10th Mountain Division. Today, Vail celebrates over six decades of top skiing and hospitality, with its two main areas—Vail Village and Lionshead Village—providing a picturesque blend of Tyrolean architecture and modern luxury.

With several villages to choose from, there is plenty of choice when it comes to Vail luxury rentals: the bustling Vail Village, the contemporary Lionshead Village, and the quieter Golden Peak. Vail Village and Lionshead both offer a lively, pedestrian-friendly atmosphere with car-free streets, making it easy for visitors to explore on foot.

The resort’s excellent free bus service ensures seamless movement between these areas. For easy access to the slopes, we recommend staying near the main gondola lifts in either Vail Village or Lionshead.

Golden Peak, while smaller and quieter, has its own charm with easy access to the slopes via a fast quad chairlift. This area is ideal for those seeking a more tranquil stay without compromising proximity to the mountain.

Vail’s ski area is one of the largest in the United States, spanning 5,317 acres across three main sectors: the Front Side, the Back Bowls, and Blue Sky Basin. Vail’s ski season typically runs from late November to mid-April. The most reliable snow conditions are found from late December through March, with February often delivering the best combination of powder and sunshine.

How do I get to Vail?

The closest airport is Eagle County Regional Airport, approximately 40 minutes away. Denver International Airport is around a two-hour drive and offers the widest choice of direct flights. Private transfers and rental cars are available from both.

Is Vail good for beginners?

Yes. Although Vail is famous for its expansive terrain and back bowls, the resort offers excellent beginner slopes at Golden Peak and Lionshead, along with top-quality ski schools and gentle progression areas.

Located in the middle of the Rocky Mountains, Vail ski holidays offer the choice of three distinct areas Front Side, the Back Bowls and Blue Sky Basin which all have something for everyone no matter what your level.

Accessible from Vail Village, Lionshead, and Golden Peak, the Front Side features wide, groomed runs with stunning wooded landscapes. Here, intermediates can enjoy long, crisscrossing trails like Born Free, Simba, and Avanti, which offer smooth cruising runs.

Meanwhile, the Back Bowls are known for their wide, open landscapes and typically ungroomed runs. A favourite for powder enthusiasts, the Back Bowls are south-facing and mostly treeless, offering a playground of powder-filled terrain. Finally, heavily wooded and perfect for snowy days, Blue Sky Basin provides excellent visibility and diverse trails for adventurous intermediates and experts. Black Diamond runs here, such as Cloud 9, offer challenging routes, while Silk Road provides an easier, groomed path.

Summer Vacations in Vail

Vail is not only a winter destination; the summer season reveals a whole new side to this scenic resort. Embark on a leisurely stroll through meadows adorned with vibrant wildflowers or conquer more challenging hiking routes leading to cascading waterfalls and iconic vistas. The Vail area is also home to many authentic ranches. Activities include horse riding, wagon rides and more.

While many know Vail for its ski slopes, this glorious mountain town also boasts some of the best fishing around. From large rivers to intimate lakes and creeks, there’s a spot for every angler to cast their line.

Water sports enthusiasts can enjoy kayaking, white-water rafting and stand-up paddle boarding while golfers have two 18-hole courses to choose from. Vail is also home to miles and miles of mountain-biking singletrack that’ll get the heart pumping.

Top summer events include SpringFree Bluegrass Festival and Vail Comedy Festival in May, GoPro Mountain Games and Vail Craft Beer Festival in June and The Bravo! Vail Music Festival in June and July which brings world-renowned musicians to picturesque venues throughout Vail for nearly seven weeks, drawing music lovers from around the world.

How to Get to Vail

Located just off Interstate 70 in the Rocky Mountains, Vail is approximately 100 miles west of Denver and 30 miles east of Eagle, making it easily accessible by both car and air.

If you’re flying in, Denver International Airport (DEN) is the largest nearby airport, with a wide range of direct flights from domestic and international destinations. From Denver, the drive to Vail takes around two hours in good weather.

Alternatively, Eagle County Regional Airport (EGE) is just 30 miles from Vail, with a driving time of approximately 40 minutes. This smaller airport offers seasonal flights from major hubs such as Dallas, Chicago, New York, and Los Angeles, making it a convenient choice if you’re looking to avoid the longer drive from Denver. There are several shuttle and private transfer options from both Denver International and Eagle County airports which we are happy to book for you.

If you're driving from nearby ski towns, Vail is conveniently located on the Epic Pass, which covers other resorts in the area. From Breckenridge, Vail is about a 45-minute drive west on I-70. From Aspen, the drive is slightly longer, taking around two hours.

For visitors arriving by train, the closest Amtrak station is in Glenwood Springs, with the California Zephyr route running from Chicago to Emeryville, California. Although there isn’t a train station in Vail itself, buses and rental cars from Glenwood Springs can easily connect you to Vail in about an hour.

Once in Vail, the resort’s layout makes getting around easy. The town is divided into Vail Village, Lionshead, and Golden Peak, with a free bus service connecting these areas and nearby accommodations.
