Open from mid-November to late April, Aspen combines four varied mountains to provide over 5000 acres of ski terrain. Covered with one lift pass, there is plenty of terrain to keep you entertained during your ski holiday to Aspen.

Located right at the foot of the town, Aspen Mountain—commonly referred to as Ajax—is the resort’s iconic centrepiece. It’s known for its steep and challenging terrain, making it a favourite among advanced skiers. Ajax’s slopes also carry a unique historical significance. Many of the short, steep double-black chutes on the mountain, like Zaugg Dump, Last Dollar, and Short Snort, are former “dump” runs. These trails were built on the steep slopes where miners once dug into the mountain, leaving behind piles of shale and debris. Today, these runs offer thrilling descents with a touch of mining history.

While Ajax is certainly challenging, Aspen Highlands is considered the most adventurous mountain of the four. It’s famous for its Highland Bowl, which offers some of the most demanding in-bounds skiing in the U.S. The Bowl’s steep, ungroomed runs attract expert skiers looking for the ultimate adrenaline rush. However, the mountain also has plenty of intermediate and beginner terrain, making it accessible to a wide range of skiers.

On the other side of the spectrum is Buttermilk, a beginner’s paradise. With its long, gentle trails, Buttermilk is the ideal mountain for novice skiers and cautious intermediates. The mountain is home to The Hideout, a dedicated centre for children’s ski lessons. Here, children can enjoy interactive play areas, lunch facilities, and a gentle slope for practising their first turns.

But Buttermilk isn’t just for beginners—it also hosts the annual Winter X Games, drawing crowds to watch some of the world’s best freestyle skiers and snowboarders compete in extreme sports events.

Snowmass, the largest of the four mountains, is a resort in itself. Bigger than the other three mountains combined, Snowmass offers an incredible variety of terrain, with something for everyone. From beginner slopes to expert tree runs, Snowmass is the ultimate mountain for families and groups with mixed abilities. In contrast to the grid-like structure of Aspen’s streets, Snowmass is a purpose-built town with a pedestrianised mall, making it easy to navigate. Ski-in/ski-out accommodation is plentiful, allowing you to step right onto the slopes from your hotel.

Best Bars & Restaurants in Aspen

From classic dining experiences to sophisticated slopeside options, Aspen has it all. Your first stop must be Ajax Tavern, home of the original truffle fries! Another classic dining option is the Cloud Nine Alpine Bistro, where champagne is sprayed as often as it is sipped! Indulge in the Raclette or decadent Gruyere fondue.

For a long lunch on the slopes in Snowmass, the cosy Cabin hits the spot whilst Sundeck offers panoramic views of the Elk Mountains and Highland Bowl on Aspen Mountain. For something a little different, check out the Mongolian grill at Cliffhouse on Buttermilk. If you have a sweet tooth,Bonnie's with its homemade apple strudel and enormous flapjacks are a must.

If you are after something a little more refined, Element 47 at The Little Nell has an impressive wine programme and a locally sourced contemporary menu. Or head to Bosq, a Michelin-star restaurant offering seasonally inspired cooking that focuses on foraging, fermenting and local farms. Another recommendation for a special occasion is Prospect at the Hotel Jerome with its unique take on Colorado cuisine.

Known for having one of the best après-ski scenes in North America, Aspen is home to numerous bars where you can sample a cocktail with friends or dance to DJs in the mountains. In Snowmass, Sam's is a great spot to enjoy a glass of rose or an Italian wine whilst Elk Camp has plenty of spacious seating areas, both indoors and out, to enjoy a tipple or two.

On Aspen Mountain, both Sundeck and Ajax Tavern are popular spots to soak up the sunshine whilst Little Nell's wine bar offers a lively spot to swap stories of your day. Merry Go Round and Cloud Nine are the places to go on Aspen Highlands whilst The Backyard at Buttermilk Mountain Lodge is the perfect place to enjoy a cocktail and some tasty bites, and on Saturday there's a DJ too.

Summer in Aspen

Although Aspen is best known as a winter destination, it’s equally stunning during the summer months. When the snow melts, the mountains reveal lush greenery, making it a haven for hiking, mountain biking, and outdoor enthusiasts.

Families can enjoy the Breathtaker Alpine Coaster and the Treeline Trial Challenge Course at the Lost Forest, whilst the Snowmass Bike Park offers 25 miles of purpose-built, diverse trails for bikers.

One of the must-see sights in summer is the Maroon Bells. Located south of Aspen at the end of Maroon Creek Road, these duel 14,000-foot mountains rise above a picturesque lake.

Reservations are required to visit Maroon Bells by car or shuttle, or you can rent an e-bike and cruise up Maroon Creek Road. There is a 1.7-mile nature loop that goes around the lake. Another popular hike is the 1.8-mile hike (3.6 miles roundtrip) to Crater Lake.

Music enthusiasts can enjoy plenty of concerts throughout the summer from the Snowmass Concert Series to Jazz Aspen Snowmass. For lovers of culture, there's plenty to explore from the Wheeler/Stallard Museum in downtown to the Ranching Museum.

How to Get to Aspen

Located just five minutes from Buttermilk (and 10 minutes from Snowmass and Aspen Mountain), the Aspen-Pitkin County Airport accommodates non-stop flights from eight major U.S. airports on United, Delta, and American Airlines: Denver, Chicago (O'Hare), San Francisco, Los Angeles, Dallas / Ft. Worth, Austin, Houston, Atlanta and Phoenix.

There are direct buses and shuttles available from Denver International Airport (DIA) and other surrounding airports. These include the Eagle County Regional Airport (70 miles) and the Rifle Garfield County Airport (70 miles).

Local taxi services are available from the Aspen/Pitkin County Airport to take you to your final destination. The private airport terminal, located just above the Aspen/Pitkin County Airport, provides taxis for charter flights as well. If you decide on a car rental, let us know and we can have the vehicle delivered to the tarmac with or without a driver or delivered to your accommodation.
