About Val d'Isere

Originally a small farming village, Val d’Isère has grown into one of the leading ski resorts in the French Alps while still retaining a clear sense of its original character. The first hotel opened in 1888, skiing arrived from 1930, and the post-war rise of winter sports gradually transformed the village into the international resort it is today.

The old centre remains at the heart of Val d’Isère, with the church, traditional stone-and-wood buildings and main village streets still giving the resort a strong identity.

From there, it extends towards La Daille at one end of the valley and Le Fornet at the other, with a number of smaller residential areas in between. Between 2017 and 2022, a €200 million development programme further improved accommodation, piste access and visitor facilities across the resort.

One of our favourite times to visit is over the Christmas period, when the village takes on a particularly festive feel with snow and ice sculptures, torchlit descents, concerts and seasonal events. New Year’s Eve is especially lively, with the centre becoming pedestrianised and animated by lights, music and fireworks. For guests who prefer quieter slopes, early December and late January are often more appealing times to visit.

Skiing in Val d'Isere

Val d’Isere’s ski area is divided into four sectors, each offering unique experiences for skiers of all levels. Solaise works well for beginners and early intermediates, Bellevarde gives access to some of the resort’s best-known runs, Le Fornet is often favoured for quieter skiing and good snow, and La Daille is useful both for access and for more testing terrain.

Solaise
Best for beginners, families and early intermediates, Solaise has some of the most approachable terrain in the resort. The main beginner area is here, along with a number of gentle runs that allow progression. It is often the best place to start the week, particularly for less confident skiers.

Bellevarde
Best for intermediates and more advanced skiers, Bellevarde is one of the central sectors in Val d’Isère and gives access to a broad mix of terrain.

It includes some enjoyable cruising runs, but also steeper pistes and the resort’s best-known descents, including La Face. It is one of the areas that gives Val d’Isère much of its reputation for proper, technical skiing.

Le Fornet
Best for quieter skiing, good snow and more experienced skiers, Le Fornet sits at the far end of the valley and often feels slightly more removed from the main resort. The sector is known for its higher altitude terrain, reliable snow and some of the most enjoyable skiing in the area. Cascade is one of the best-known runs here, and the sector is also well regarded for off-piste with a guide.

La Daille
Located at the entrance to the resort, La Daille is a useful base for guests who want efficient lift access and direct links into the wider domain. The sector includes some more demanding terrain, including the OK and Orange runs.

Who Skiing in Val d'Isere Suits Best

Beginners
Val d’Isère can work well for beginners, with a reputation for excellent ski schools. The resort has dedicated nursery slopes and good areas for early progression, especially around Solaise, but it is not usually the first choice for guests looking for the gentlest ski area in the Alps. It tends to suit beginners who want to learn in a serious ski resort and who are happy to build confidence gradually over the course of the week.

Intermediates
Confident intermediates usually get a great deal from Val d’Isère. There is enough range across Solaise, Bellevarde and the wider linked area to keep the skiing varied, and the scale of the domain means you can cover a lot of ground without the week feeling repetitive. For skiers who enjoy covering distance and mixing easier runs with something more demanding, Val d’Isère works particularly well.

Advanced Skiers
Advanced skiers have always been drawn to Val d’Isère due to the steeper terrain, well-known black runs and off-piste possibilities. For experienced skiers who want a resort with proper scope over the course of a week, Val d’Isère remains one of the most rewarding choices in the French Alps.

Snow Conditions in Val d'Isere

Due to its altitude, Val d’Isère is one of the more reliable resorts in France for snow conditions. The village sits at 1,850m, and the linked ski area rises to 3,456m, which helps maintain good coverage through the main winter months and later into the season.

The wider Tignes–Val d’Isère domain also benefits from extensive snowmaking and predominantly north-facing slopes, both of which help preserve snow quality as the season progresses.

In practical terms, that usually means dependable conditions from December through to spring, with the higher sectors above Le Fornet and the wider links towards Tignes particularly important later in the season.

Restaurants in Val d'Isere

Val d’Isère has a broader dining scene than many resorts of a similar size. It is not defined by Michelin-star concentration in the way Courchevel 1850 is, but it has a good mix of established mountain restaurants, serious village dining and livelier late-afternoon spots. During busier weeks, the more popular tables are often booked well in advance, so it is worth planning ahead.

Things to do in Val d'Isere Beyond Skiing

Val d’Isère has a broader non-ski programme than many French resorts, which is one of the reasons it works well for mixed groups. Alongside the mountain setting itself, there is enough variety to fill a week for guests who are not skiing every day, from quieter outdoor activities to more unusual experiences on the lake and in the valley. The resort also has the Aquasportif centre in the middle of the village, which is useful for swimming, wellness and indoor sport on colder days.

How to Get to Val d'Isere

Val d’Isère is accessible from several airports, with Bourg-Saint-Maurice the nearest rail station.

Chambéry (approx. 2 hours by road)
Grenoble (approx. 2 hours 45 minutes)
Lyon (approx. 3 hours)
Geneva (approx. 3 hours)

The nearest train station is Bourg-Saint-Maurice, approximately 40 minutes from the resort. For many international guests, Geneva is the most practical airport option because of its wider choice of flights. From there, most continue by private transfer, although shared transfers and bus services are also available during the winter season.

For guests driving to resort, the final section of road from Bourg-Saint-Maurice is steep and winding. In periods of snowfall, winter tyres and snow chains are essential.
