Ideally located in the heart of the Portes du Soleil ski area, Morzine is a chalet-style town with a fantastic playground of 650km of ski slopes. With its wooden facades, sculpted balconies and slate covered roofs, Morzine exudes Alpine charm. Sprawling along both sides of a river gorge, Morzine and its surrounding villages are packed with modern apartments, hotels and luxury chalets, many of which come with their own spas and cinema rooms.
The town centre is lively with great access to the slopes and the whole of the Portes du Soleil ski area. Morzine shares its local slopes with its slightly higher neighbour, Les Gets. Across town is a gondola which forms a link with a chain of lifts leading to Avoriaz on the Portes du Soleil circuit. This is a fine destination for beginners and intermediate skiers, with an abundance of gentle pistes. It is also a good base for exploring Porte du Soleil’s many challenging options including the notorious Swiss Wall.
Morzine has some excellent mountain restaurants, providing great opportunities to sample some delicious Savoyard cuisine. One of the livelier French resorts, Morzine has a fantastic après scene with regular live music and DJs entertaining the masses throughout the winter season.
If you haven’t used up all your energy on the slopes, Morzine offers a large variety of activities to suit all ages. Nocturnal sledging, ice skating and snowmobiling are sure to entertain the younger members of the group whilst thrill-seekers can test their mettle speed riding, mountaineering or if you’re feeling particularly brave, ice diving. In January, La Grande Odyssée, Europe’s largest husky dog race, arrives in the resort and in March and April music fans flock to Rock the Pistes and Basscamp festivals respectively.
