Megève

A traditional Haute-Savoie village with spectacular views.

Conceived in the 1920’s by the Rothschilds as a French alternative to St. Moritz, Megève was a prime destination for the French aristocracy and remains one of the world’s most exclusive ski resorts today. With an atmosphere of elegance and style that attracts the international jet set, Megève is also an excellent family holiday destination as well as a cultural and social centre that retains a delightfully French atmosphere.

The charming car-free town, centres around a main medieval-style square displaying a diverse range of architecture, from a centuries-old church and Benedictine priory to five-star hotels, luxury chalets and modern apartments. Paradise for window shoppers and those who wish to enjoy a ski resort without taking to the slopes, Megève is filled with stylish boutiques, fantastic Michelin-star restaurants and sophisticated bars for enjoying a post-ski cocktail or two.

With views of Mont Blanc from many of the runs, Megève is one of France’s most picturesque places to ski. Divided into three sectors - Rochebrune, Mont d’Arbois and Le Jaillet, there is more than enough skiing to satisfy everyone. Families will find plenty of gentle slopes to suit the younger skiers whilst lovers of wide, open pistes can take advantage of Cote 2000 which benefits from exceptional snow quality due to its high altitude. One of Megève’s great advantages is the lack of competition for fresh powder meaning keen off-piste skiers can take their pick of some fantastic ungroomed runs. Freestylers are not left out either with a dedicated area equipped with a giant air bag for performing tricks.

From family walks in the village to snowshoeing altitude trails, Megève is a beautiful place to explore on foot. Equally, it is possible to enjoy a sleigh ride through the landscape driven by a pack of huskies or a horse-driven tour of the village. A true sports paradise, Megève offers a variety of sporting opportunities at Le Palais sports centre which features an ice rink and aqua centre. Exciting events take place throughout the year, but one of the most eagerly anticipated events of the winter is the lighting of the Christmas tree in the village square which is accompanied by a spectacular concert, bringing together both locals and winter holidaymakers.
