Luxury Ski Holidays Bulgaria

With 30% of its land territory made up of mountain ranges, Bulgaria is a popular alternative ski destination providing efficient lifts, welcoming slopes and breathtaking scenery. With a ski season running from December to March, Bulgaria’s high altitude skiing offers great snow conditions throughout the whole season so you can enjoy a luxury ski holiday in Bulgaria right into the Easter holidays.

For ambitious skiers, the extent of slopes is not as diverse as those found in the Swiss or French Alps, so this might not be the best option for keen skiers looking to clock up the miles. Whilst the black ski run options are fairly limited for advanced skiers, Bulgaria is ideal for beginner and intermediate skiers with a good mix of blue and red runs to discover. Offering great value for money a luxury ski holiday in Bulgaria won’t leave you disappointed.

Luxury Ski Resorts in Bulgaria

Offering reliable snow conditions in winter, Bulgaria has three main ski resorts: Borovets, Bansko and Pamporovo. Resorts such as Pamporovo in the Rhodope Mountains provide outstanding ski schools and facilities for beginners and intermediate skiers making a ski holiday in Bulgaria ideal for families.

With an average of 270 days of sun per year, Pamporovo is one of Europe’s sunniest mountain resorts so you can soak up the sun whilst enjoying the perfect powder on offer. While the main ski resorts of Bulgaria aren’t known for countless five-star properties, there are rare exceptions such as Villa Gella which surpasses many of the top properties in the Alps in terms of both facilities and services.

Skiing in Bulgaria

Whilst most ski resorts in Bulgaria are considerably smaller than the main resorts in the Alps there is superb beginner and intermediate skiing in Bulgaria.
Pamporovo, one of Bulgaria’s main ski resorts hosts 37 km of downhill ski terrain with over 60% of the runs being suitable for beginners, making it a fantastic choice for a family ski holiday in Bulgaria.

Regardless of its smaller size, Pamorovo still receives a reasonable amount of snow each year and is combined with state-of-the-art snowmaking facilities to ensure constant cover. Many of the runs meet at the peak of Mount Snezhanka and wind their way through the trees back to the base giving you ample time to perfect those turns on the way down.

If downhill skiing in Bulgaria is not to your liking, many resorts also offer cross-country skiing making it versatile for large groups.

Eating and Drinking in Bulgaria

There are many places to stop and enjoy fantastic local food on your luxury ski holiday in Bulgaria from traditional village restaurants to dining with a view over 2000m high in the Cafe Panorama in the old television tower in Pamporovo ski resort.

Like many countries each district has their own traditional dishes and Bulgaria is no exception. It is no surprise that many of the dishes from the Rhodope Mountains region are hearty winter warmers not dissimilar to those you would find in most Alpine ski resorts. Take a well earned break from skiing and try Patatnik, a shredded potato pie with local Bulgarian sirene cheese or Bob Chorba, a hearty bean soup packed with flavour.

After a day on the slopes many skiers return to the base of the mountain to take advantage of the excellent apres-ski on offer in Bulgaria, with many apres bars continuing into the early hours.
