Crans and Montana are in fact two separate towns, their centres a mile apart from each other. However, a number of low-rise buildings have merged the two towns together, with each centre retaining its individual character.

Crans is the more upmarket of the two areas with the majority of the luxury chalets and apartments. There’s also an abundance of designer shops to peruse, numerous gourmet restaurants for fine dining, and bustling bars and clubs to while away the evening. Montana is the quieter and more family-oriented part of the resort.

Skiing in Crans Montana

Crans Montana offers 140 km of sunny south-facing ski slopes with the Plan Morte glacier at the top providing good snow conditions in even the warmest weather. From your luxury chalet in Crans Montana, you have access to the slopes from three main points - the Merbé/Cry d’Er gondola in Crans, the Arnouva gondola in Montana and Les Violettes in the middle of the ski area.

With miles of open cruising runs, Crans Montana’s slopes are best suited to intermediate level skiers with long runs of up to 12km in length. The Col du Pochet, just behind the summit of Bella Lui (2,534m) is a brilliant spot for backcountry skiing whilst the men’s downhill course, the Piste Nationale, is another favourite. Beginners have excellent learning areas at resort level on the golf course and at mid-mountain. The resort also has a fantastic snow park with an Olympic-size half-pipe.

Eating and Drinking in Crans Montana

Where you are staying in a catered chalet in Crans Montana or a luxury hotel, you will still wish to sample the resort’s incredibly diverse gastronomic scene, with everything from Thai, Japanese and Lebanese to Italian, Argentinian and of course Swiss. On the mountain are numerous Swiss mountain chalets serving classic dishes like tartiflette and rosti. For fine dining, Michelin-starred Le Mont Blanc not only offers superb food and an interesting wine list but spectacular views to accompany your meal too.

There are plenty of opportunities to party in Crans Montana. Montana tends to attract a younger crowd with its more traditional apres vibe whilst Crans bars and clubs tend to be more expensive thus attracting an older crowd.

  2. Start your morning on the higher,open and tree-less slopes of Mont Lachaux (2,140m)
  3. Continue up to Bella Lui and take in the spectacular panoramic views, maybe pausing for a coffee at the giddyingly high restaurant.
  4. Take the scenic blue to Chetseron and explore the series of downhill runs used as a race course.
  5. Pause for lunch at the mouth-wateringly delicious Chetzeron close to the top of the Cry d’Er gondola.
  6. Spend the afternoon exploring Crans Montana from a bird’s eye view on a helicopter or hot air balloon flight.

Location & Map

Crans Montana is easily accessed by car in around 2.5 hours from Geneva airport. Sion airport is much closer but has fewer flights. Whilst there is not a railway station in Crans Montana it is possible to reach the resort by train, completing the journey on the funicular railway from Sierre to Montana Gare.
