The rapidly developing resort of Andermatt has seen a rise in luxury chalets and apartments since the arrival of five-star hotel the Chedi Andermatt in 2013. The main street runs from the central river bridge to the Gemsstock cable car with new development taking place past the station on the outskirts of the resort.

The recent opening of the Andermatt Reuss village, just outside the old town, is now home to several luxury Andermatt chalet rentals. Here you will also find a large concert hall seating 650 guests, making it suitable for conferences, seminars and other events.

Andermatt Reuss is car-free with a central piazza. For smaller groups, there are also plenty of Andermatt Alpine apartments available to rent.

With fabulous hotels, a wide selection of affordable apartments, private chalets, a golf course, new ski lifts and an expanded ski area spanning 180 kms, plus a great choice of restaurants and bars, Andermatt offers the perfect Swisstainable destination to visit all year round.

What Sets Andermatt Ski Resort Apart?

Although change has been slow to come to Andermatt, the resort has been upping its game in recent years with a £1.2 billion plan put in place by Egyptian investor Samih Sawiris to reinvent this luxury ski resort. This has resulted in an enhanced ski area linking Sedrun and Disentis with 180 km of skiing to discover. As well as great skiing, there is an influx of gourmet restaurants and luxury ski chalets and hotels such as the Chedi Hotel Andermatt.

Located at the entrance to the Oberalp Pass, Andermatt ski resort in Switzerland is an attractive year-round destination offering a varied selection of activities in winter and summer. Serious skiers will love exploring Andermatt’s steep terrain, knee-deep powder and exhilarating black runs, whilst there is also a kids’ park and beginners’ area for those learning how to ski and snowboard.

Away from the slopes, the resort has plenty to amuse visitors during their ski holiday in Andermatt. Snowshoe tours and winter hikes are popular pastimes here, taking in some of the most magnificent scenery in the Swiss Alps. Andermatt also has a variety of excursions to enjoy, from scenic train rides to fascinating museums documenting the region’s history.

I recently had the pleasure of spending a long weekend in Andermatt. The iconic Glacier Express train passes right through the heart of the village, connecting the surrounding local towns and offering the perfect way to take in the scenery at a slower pace. The skiing here is fantastic, with challenging terrain and plenty of off-piste opportunities.

How high is Andermatt?

Andermatt ski resort sits at 1,444 metres, with slopes reaching up to 2,961 metres on the Gemsstock. This altitude guarantees exceptional snow quality and panoramic views across central Switzerland’s Ursern Valley.

How do I get to Andermatt for a ski holiday?

The nearest airports to Andermatt are Zurich and Milan (both 90 minutes away), and Basel (120 minutes away). You can also travel by private plane to Buochs (45 minutes away). Additionally, the resort is easily accessible by train, with a journey time of two hours from Zurich and three and a half hours from Milan.

What is the snow like in Andermatt?

The Andermatt-Sedrun-Disentis ski area is one of the most snow-sure areas in Switzerland, reaching altitudes of up to 2,961 metres. Additionally, there are 330 snow cannons, and 60% of the slopes are equipped with snow-making facilities to ensure good conditions later in the season.

Is Andermatt suitable for beginners?

While Andermatt does have a kids' park and beginners' area for those learning to ski and snowboard, it is not a resort we particularly recommend for complete beginners. However, if you do visit as a beginner, slopes in Nätschen, Gütsch, and Oberalp are the most suitable.

Is Andermatt a family-friendly ski resort?

Andermatt offers a welcoming atmosphere, with a range of family-friendly accommodation options and plenty of non-skiing activities to enjoy. The Matti KidsArena, located between Nätschen and Gütsch, and the Druni KidsArena near Sedrun railway station are particularly popular with children. Other family-friendly activities include tobogganing, horse-drawn sleigh rides, and ice skating.

Is Andermatt a good destination for non-skiers?

Yes. Andermatt is ideal for non-skiers, offering a wealth of activities such as snowshoe tours, winter hikes, and fat biking. Additionally, scenic train rides and museums provide insights into the region's history. In summer, you can climb famous 4,000-metre peaks with a guide or enjoy a round of golf at the 18-hole course.

Boasting an incredible snow record and with the merge of Ski Arena Andermatt-Sedrun and Bergbahnen Disentis, skiers visiting Andermatt can enjoy more than 180 km of outstanding pistes.

More suited to intermediate or mixed-ability skiers, the Nätschen area is the gentler and sunnier area of the two, whilst the Gemsstock mountain is high and north-facing making it very reliable for snow and best suited to advanced skiers.

Whilst Andermatt does have two children's ski areas, it is not a resort that we particularly recommend for complete beginners. Instead, the slopes are more suited to intermediate skiers looking to take their skiing to the next level. On the Gemsstock mountain, intermediate skiers can enjoy the long red run from the top cable car station, as well as a number of shorter runs around the mid-station. The Nätschen and linked Sedrun areas also provide a great variety of intermediate terrain.

Located in the Swiss Alps, Andermatt is an excellent ski destination for expert skiers. Gemsstock mountain has numerous long on and off-piste areas to explore and thanks to its powder, Andermatt is a free-riders paradise. For fans of cross country skiing, the Ursen valley provides great conditions for both classic and skating cross-country skiing.

Best Bars & Restaurants in Andermatt

From the renowned Chedi restaurants to cosy mountain restaurants, Andermatt has a delightful selection of dining spots for you to enjoy during your stay in this beautiful Alpine resort. If you're looking to enjoy traditional Swiss cuisine, restaurant Ochsen specialises in fondue and raclette and has a cosy and rustic atmosphere. Famous for its rösti with around 13 variations, Gasthaus Tell is also a popular spot with friendly staff and a welcoming atmosphere.

Awarded one Michelin star and 16 GaultMillau points in 2017, the Chedi Japanese restaurant also provides top-quality authentic Japanese cuisine with a western haute twist and open studio kitchens so you can watch as your food is prepared with a sushi and sashimi bar.

Located in the centre of Andermatt, Spycher has both indoor and outdoor seating so you can enjoy the sunshine on a bluebird day. A peaceful spot, Spycher is popular for both its pizzas and calzones but also makes a great spot for a drink or two after a day on the slopes.

For a sophisticated après experience, Bärbar provides an extensive cocktail list as well as a large selection of fine wine and craft beers to be enjoyed by the prominent fireplace. Lovers of wine can also enjoy a glass of wine or two to the sounds of blues and jazz at the Vinothek wine bar housed in one of the oldest houses in Andermatt dating back to 1620.

Top Events & Activities in Andermatt

For non-skiers, Andermatt also has plenty of alternative winter activities including snowshoe tours, horse sleigh rides and tobogganing. Marvel at the scenery on a helicopter sightseeing flight or take to the ice for skating, curling or hockey.

Popular events in winter include Verve Festival, a techno festival in early December featuring 18 techno artists over three stages. Andermatt Music also hosts several classical concerts throughout the year.

Summer in Andermatt

An adventure playground for young and old, summer in Andermatt is the perfect time to discover the pristine alpine countryside hidden under snow in the winter months. With eight Alp passes nearby for the road bike, this stunning resort is also full of mountain bike and hiking trails waiting to be explored.

For the adventurous members of the group, Andermatt guides will take you on an Alpine adventure as you climb famous 4000m peaks.

Golf lovers can enjoy Andermatt’s 18-hole golf course. Adjacent to the village and at a size of over 6 km long, this stunning course was designed by the renowned golf course architect Kurt Rossknecht making it one of the most beautiful golf courses in the Alps.

How to Get to Andermatt

Andermatt is well-connected to major airports, with Zurich Airport being the closest at just 125 km away. Other popular gateways include Milan Malpensa (190 km) and Geneva Airport (260 km).

Airport transfers by car take around 90 minutes from Zurich and 2 hours from Milan.

If you prefer a scenic train ride, Switzerland's efficient rail network provides regular services to Andermatt. Take the Gotthard Express to Göschenen and change onto the Matterhorn Gotthard line, which will get you to Andermatt in just ten minutes.
