Top 5 Winter Activities in Verbier

Regarded as one of the world's top resorts, Verbier has an abundance of activities to enjoy on and off the slopes.

Serena Norton

Perched on a sunny plateau at 1,500m, Verbier enjoys an enchanting setting in the Val de Bagnes. Throughout the season, you can enjoy a wide variety of exciting winter sports and activities as well as a range of sporting, cultural, artistic and gastronomic events. Whether you're a skier or non-skier, old or young, there is plenty to keep you entertained during your stay.

Experience the thrill of heli-skiing

With Verbier providing some of the best off-piste skiing in the world, freeride enthusiasts need look no further for their next adrenaline rush. Heli-skiing in Verbier allows you to access some of the best runs in the Valais along with an abundance of fresh powder and jaw-dropping views. Under the supervision of a qualified guide, tackle glorious descents from popular destinations such as Rosablanche (3314m), Petit Combin (3,663m), Trient Glacier (3,000m) or Pigne d’Arolla (3,7980m). If you’re feeling particularly athletic, why not combine a helicopter drop with ski touring?

Admire Verbier’s panoramas with a team of huskies

Take a magical dog sled ride through Verbier’s epic landscape, perhaps stopping for a gourmet picnic or glass of champagne en-route. Pulled by a team of 8 dogs, sit back and enjoy a panoramic tour of the snowy scenery. You can even become a musher for half a day, learning how to harness the dogs and drive the sled yourself - a must for dog lovers. Prices start at CHF 160 for adults and CHF 90 for children.

Have go at ice climbing

Renowned for its frozen waterfalls, Verbier is a positive playground for ice climbing enthusiasts during the winter season. Whether you are a complete novice or experienced climber, there are routes for everyone in the area of Val des Bagnes. If you’re a beginner, it is recommended you take a mountain guide with you to teach you how to make your way up the natural icy falls. You can also practice at the sports centre which has a 600m² climbing wall with 60 different climbing routes.

Speed down Verbier’s slopes on a toboggan

Verbier is home to the longest sledge run in French-speaking Switzerland between Savoleyres and La Tzoumaz. Take the cable car to Savoleyres (2354m) and admire the dazzling views of the Rhône Valley and Valais mountains before dropping down a breathtaking 834 metres through the forest, making sure to negotiate the hairpin turns on the 10km route along the way. Sleds are available to rent at the top of the Savoleyres cable car and the route is suitable for all ages but children should be accompanied by an adult.

Time your trip to coincide with one of Verbier’s epic events

Beginning with the Polaris Festival in early December, Verbier has a packed calendar of events to enjoy during the season. There really is something for everyone, from the Verbier Art Summit at the end of January, which brings together influential figures in the art world with a series of workshops and talks, to Verbier Xtreme at the end of March which sees the best freeriders on the planet compete for the title of World Champion in the Freeride World Tour on the Bec des Rosses. For foodies there’s four days of gastronomy to enjoy in early April courtesy of Haute Cuisine by W Verbier, followed by Verbier High Five Carlsberg; a series of fun sporting events including giant slalom, mini kilometre spring, ski cross and the famous waterslide.
