You’re planning a ski holiday with family or friends, but you’re not all at the same level. So where do you go? The best ski resorts for mixed abilities offer gentle slopes for learners and plenty of variety for experienced skiers, with good ski schools to help everyone progress. It should also be easy to meet on the mountain and find runs you can enjoy together. With this in mind, we have selected five resorts that fit the bill.
Best Ski Resorts for Mixed Abilities

Discover five of the best ski resorts for mixed abilities, where beginners can build confidence and experienced skiers have plenty to explore.
1. Courchevel, France
Courchevel would be one of my first suggestions for a group with a wide range of skiing abilities. Around Pralong and Bellecôte, gentle green and blue pistes give less confident skiers space to practise, while the Ariondaz sector above Courchevel 1650 offers further options. Experienced skiers can tackle demanding descents such as L’Éclipse and the Grand Couloir, or explore the wider Three Valleys, with its 600 km of linked pistes.
The choice of luxury chalets in Courchevel includes properties with private spas, games rooms and cinemas, as well as playrooms for younger children. Away from the pistes, dog sledding, tobogganing and tandem paragliding offer further ways to enjoy the mountains together.
2. Méribel, France
Positioned in the middle of the Three Valleys, Méribel gives keen skiers plenty of choice: head towards Courchevel, explore the Belleville Valley or stay closer to home. Beginners can build confidence on the Altiport’s gentle green pistes, including the Inuit piste for children, while Yéti Park above Méribel-Mottaret provides another introduction to the slopes. More accomplished skiers can head up Mont Vallon for longer, more demanding descents.
There is also a good choice of ski schools, including Oxyski and ESF, offering private and group lessons. Whether you are learning for the first time or looking to improve your technique, our concierge team can arrange tuition around your ability and ambitions for the week.
Méribel’s mountain restaurants make it easy for mixed groups to meet after exploring different areas of the mountain. Le Blanchot, near the Altiport on the edge of the forest, is a convenient option, with access on foot or by the free resort bus as well as on skis. Away from skiing, snowshoe walks and tobogganing offer ways to enjoy the mountains, while the swimming pool and bowling alley provide indoor entertainment.

3. Lech, Austria
Lech’s gentle blue pistes and dedicated learning areas work well for groups with beginners. Children can learn close to the village centre opposite Schlegelkopf, with further nursery areas in Oberlech and Zürs. As confidence grows, Monzabonsee is one of my favourite runs to progress to, a scenic blue reached via the Rüfikopf cable cars.
Intermediates can enjoy leisurely cruising around Oberlech before exploring the more challenging pistes in Zürs. Experienced members of the group have plenty to explore too. The Saloberkopf area in Warth-Schröcken offers challenging off-piste terrain to discover with a guide, while the famously steep Langer Zug will test even the most accomplished skiers.
For a mixed group, I would consider one of the fully serviced luxury chalets in Lech, with a private chef and driver. This allows everyone to leave for lessons or return from skiing at different times before coming together for dinner. There are properties with private pools, extensive spas and cinema rooms, alongside options offering ski-in/ski-out access.
4. Alta Badia, Italy
Having recently spent a week skiing in Alta Badia, I was impressed by the variety of terrain available for different abilities. Of its 130 km of pistes, 74 km are graded blue, giving improving skiers plenty to explore beneath the Dolomites’ pale limestone peaks.
There is more demanding skiing too. The black Gran Risa above La Villa hosts World Cup giant slalom racing, while confident intermediates should set aside a day for the Sellaronda circuit. The full route requires stamina and confidence on red pistes. We recommend starting early to allow time for stops along the way and to return before the connecting lifts close.
Alta Badia takes lunch seriously too, with mountain restaurants ranging from rustic Alpine huts serving hearty local dishes to panoramic lounges with gourmet menus and extensive wine lists. Piz Boé Alpine Lounge, beside the upper station of the Boé gondola above Corvara, is a great option for lunch together: skiers can meet those coming up by gondola, with views towards Sassongher through the restaurant’s large windows. Take a look at our guide to the best bars and restaurants in Alta Badia for more options.

5. Megève
With gentle green and blue pistes and a wide choice of ski schools, Megève is ideal for groups with beginners and improving skiers. La Caboche has the Schuss beginner carpet, reached from the village by the Chamois gondola or from Mont d’Arbois by the Rocharbois cable car. As confidence grows, blue pistes such as Finance and Prapacot offer further routes to explore.
Intermediates can enjoy tree-lined pistes and longer runs towards Saint-Nicolas and Côte 2000, while the Grande Épaule run offers magnificent views of Mont Blanc. Experienced skiers can test themselves on the Grand Chamois black piste on Mont Joly or explore the off-piste terrain with a guide.
Away from the slopes, Megève’s village centre is home to designer boutiques and excellent restaurants, while luxury chalets in Megève provide a private base for bringing family and friends together after skiing.
