Who This Chalet Suits
Heinz Julen Loft is ideal for design-conscious guests who want something far more memorable than a traditional timber chalet. It works particularly well for couples, small families, or a group of friends who value architecture and entertaining space. The design is open and unconventional, so it will appeal most to guests who enjoy statement interiors rather than classic Alpine cosiness.
Property Tour & Rooms
One of Zermatt’s most distinctive private homes
Designed by Zermatt-born architect and designer Heinz Julen, Heinz Julen Loft brings together glass, steel, textured concrete and timber in a way that feels closer to a Manhattan apartment than a traditional mountain home. Formerly Julen’s own private residence, the loft still has the feeling of a home made for entertaining, with dramatic proportions, playful design details and wide views across the village and surrounding peaks.
The main living space is the centrepiece. Six-metre-high windows frame the mountain scenery, while a fireplace set into the glass wall, a baby grand Steinway piano and Heinz Julen-designed furniture give the room real character.
The illuminated dining table can be raised towards the ceiling when more space is needed, turning the living area from a dinner setting into a party space. Other details, from the exterior electric curtain that wraps around the glass to the armchairs that fold into luggage-style trunks, make the loft feel highly personal and unlike anything else in Zermatt.
The kitchen is open to the living area and continues the sense of invention, with distinctive details such as cupboard handles made from bent soup spoons. A mezzanine level adds a bar and relaxed seating area, as well as one of the guest bedrooms and an indoor Jacuzzi.
The top floor is reserved for the master suite, reached via a stairwell behind the breakfast table. This level includes a king-size bed, private balcony, walk-in wardrobe, en-suite shower room, in-room Jacuzzi bath, sauna and exercise machine. Two further en-suite double bedrooms, both with Austrian twin beds, are arranged across the ground and mezzanine floors.

Good to Know
Design & Style
- Heinz Julen Loft is a highly contemporary, open-plan property with an industrial edge. Guests looking for low ceilings, heavy timber and classic chalet charm may prefer a more traditional Zermatt chalet.
- The bedrooms lean towards a minimalist aesthetic rather than a cosy one, especially the master suite, where the bed sits centrally within the space.
Layout & Space
- The master suite is very open, with the Jacuzzi bath positioned within the bedroom rather than in a separate bathroom. This is worth bearing in mind when allocating rooms.
Suitability for Families & Groups
- For larger groups, Heinz Julen Loft can be rented alongside Heinz Julen Penthouse, located within the same residence, comfortably accommodating up to 14 guests.
Location & Access
Heinz Julen Loft is set above Zermatt, with access from the main street via a tunnel and private lift. The lift brings guests up to the terrace of the Omnia Hotel, from where it is around a two-minute walk to the property.
- Distance to Ski Lifts: 10-minute walk from both the Matterhorn Express & Gornergrat ski lifts.
- Distance to Village Centre: 3-minute walk
