St Moritz Ski Area
Nestled in the Engadine Valley at 1,856m, St Moritz enjoys a rare combination of snow and sun reliability. With 87 pistes spanning four large ski sectors plus several smaller sectors, the resort has an extensive ski area which suits both beginners and more experienced skiers. With long cruising runs and a handful of testing blacks, Corviglia is our favourite area to ski. However, due to its easy access from the villages, it does tend to attract the crowds at weekends, so we recommend heading over to Corvatsch, which usually has some of the best snow conditions in the region.
St Moritz Village & Lifestyle
Off the slopes, St Moritz comes into its own. The resort’s culinary scene is second to none, with seven Michelin stars to its name. There is a dazzling array of outdoor activities to explore, from ice climbing and snowkiting to ice skating and bobsleighing. Designer shopping is almost a sport in itself here, with flagship stores from Dior, Cartier, and Giorgio Armani, as well as local artisan shops, ski boutiques like Moncler and Kjus, and gourmet food and wine retailers.
For art lovers, Hauser & Wirth – Switzerland’s leading contemporary art gallery – and the Segantini Museum are not to be missed.
I’ve visited St Moritz many times over the years, with clients, journalists, property owners and most recently for a short break with my wife. We enjoyed excellent hospitality at the Carlton, relaxing in the spa and sampling the taster menu at Da Vittorio. The snow was superb and we managed to get two solid days skiing at Corviglia, stopping for lunch at Langosteria. Other highlights included dining at Chesa Veglia Patrizier Stuben and chocolate shopping for our children at Hanselmann.

By Road:
Despite its secluded location in the heart of the Grisons Alps, St Moritz is extremely well connected via various transport options. The closest international airports are Zurich (ZRH) and Milan Malpensa (MXP), each about a three-hour drive away, whilst Munich is approximately four hours away. We work with several trusted private transfer companies and are happy to recommend or book airport transfers on your behalf. If you prefer not to drive over mountain passes, you can transport your car through the Vereina Tunnel via train, which takes just 18 minutes from Prättigau (Selfranga) to Engadine (Saglianes).
By Train:
In our opinion, one of the best ways to reach St. Moritz is by train. The Glacier Express and Bernina Express, both UNESCO World Heritage railway lines, provide truly spectacular views. Another scenic option is the Rhaetian Railway (RhB), which connects St. Moritz to Chur via the Albula Pass and to Tirano (Italy) via the Bernina Pass. By Plane & Helicopter:
Located in the nearby town of Samedan, it is also possible to fly quickly and comfortably to Engadin Airport by private jet, charter flight or air taxi. The airport is located just 10 minutes from St Moritz. Direct flights and helicopter transfers to various European destinations can also be arranged.

Home to four large ski areas (Corviglia/Piz Nair, Corvatsch/Furtschellas, Diavolezza and Lagalb) and five smaller ski areas, the Upper Engadine offers 350 km of varied skiing. Beginners can find a variety of slopes perfect for their first attempts, such as the Salastrains piste in Corviglia, the small Languard family ski area in the centre of Pontresina and the Survij nursery lift and magic carpet at the edge of Samedan village.
The main sector, Corviglia/Piz Nair, is accessible via a funicular from Dorf, a chairlift from Bad, and two chairlifts from Suvretta. However, we recommend venturing further afield during your stay.
Corvatsch offers one of the Engadine region’s classic cruises, while the steeper slopes in the linked areas of Diavolezza and Lagalb present a greater challenge. For families seeking quieter skiing, the picturesque village of Zuoz is ideal. Additionally, cross-country skiers can explore 230 km of trails winding through the Upper Engadine. We love the Direttissima for its scenic views, but for more of a challenge, the legendary marathon course that runs from Maloja to S-chanf is the perfect leg burner.
We also recommend an evening of night skiing at Corvatsch, home to Switzerland's longest-illuminated slope. Open every Friday from December to January, you can enjoy skiing by the light of the moon before unwinding with a drink at the Hossa Bar.

When it comes to dining in St Moritz, you are spoilt for choice. On the mountain, our favourite place to watch the world go by is Paradiso. South-facing, you can feast on lobster salad or black truffle fondue while enjoying stunning views of the lakes. For a leisurely lunch, savour freshly prepared Italian cuisine on Langosteria’s terrace - the truffle pizza is incredible! Alongside remarkable Michelin-star restaurants like Da Vittorio and Ecco, St Moritz also boasts wonderful traditional eateries.
One of our favourites has to be Chesa Veglia, a chalet in the centre of town full of rustic charm offering local dishes such as bratwurst and lentil soup, alongside more international modern cuisine.
For a quick pit spot, Hanselmann on the main street is a must. Don’t leave without trying the delicious Engadiner Nusstorte. For the best dried meat in the valley, visit Hatecke, a grocery store offering soups and small plates. If you’re in the mood for apres-ski, we suggest Alpina Hütte with its large sun terrace and DJ. For a relaxed drink, we like La Scarpetta, a cosy wine bar and delicatessen. After dinner, Hemingway’s Club or King’s Social House offer a glamorous setting to end your evening.

How to get to St Moritz
The nearest airports to St Moritz are Zurich (215 km) and Milan (188 km). Both airports are linked to St Moritz by train, but it is possible to take a private transfer or hire a car too. Travel times are around three hours by car from both Zurich and Milan, and approximately four hours from Munich and Basel.
St Moritz has its own airport (Engadin Airport) located in the nearby town of Samedan (6km). Visitors can fly by private jet, charter flight or air taxi.
If travelling by train, we recommend taking the Glacier Express. This direct train between Zermatt and St Moritz takes you through three cantons and offers breathtaking scenery. From the south, the Bernina Express is another scenic option. From Zurich Airport, the train journey to St Moritz takes around 3 hours 45 minutes.
